The CDT trail is a long-distance hiking trail of about 4890 kilometres. Leading from the Mexican to the Canadian border. It is one of the U.S. National Scenic Trails established by law in 1968.
Composed of dedicated trails and minor roads, the trail is approximately 75% complete. On the unfinished portions, you must make your own way through the terrain or hike on roadways.
The Continental Divide Trail trail follows the Continental Divide of the Americas along the Rocky Mountains. It traverses five U.S. states – Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. In Montana near the Canadian border, the CDT crosses Triple Divide Pass. From which waters may flow to either the Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean.

In summer 2021 I thru-hiked the entire CDT trail – it took me 131 hiking days for 2850 miles. I started on may 7th in southwestern New Mexico and hiked north (northbound or nobo). I finished the trail on the Canadian border in Waterton Lake on september 14th. The Continental Divide Trail 2021 treated me far harder than the PCT some years earlier.
And still… an unforgettable experience once more. Sleep, hike, eat and repeat…

Leaving East Glacier with the last resupply in my backpack caused mixed feelings. My journey on the CDT is ending soon. Rain, sun, frosty nights and stunning views followed me and my friends Tim and Renee on the last section of the Continental Divide Trail through the Glacier Nationalpark.

To arrive at the Canadian monument close to Waterton caused happiness and emptiness at the same . After 2850 miles or 4580 km I enjoyed a quiet moment by the monument and end of my Continental Divide Trail 2021 thru-hike. It is impossible to describe the feelings when reaching a goal after 4 month and 1 week hiking… Tears and smiles on my face… I was happy but wondering how difficult reentering civilisation will be.

Thank you CDT class 2021 for a great time out there!
On this thru-hike I decided to vlog instead of writing… enjoy all the videos on the blog page Continental Divide Trail or straight on my Youtube channel!
